Overview

The IS Apprentice, reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

This one-to-two-year apprenticeship in the Information Services Department will provide each participant with both the experience and training in specific IT related skills as well as exposure to business operations to be an accomplished IT professional. No prior experience is needed to join this program. The program consists of on-the-job training while attending courses to complete your associate degree in an IT field. The IS Apprentice will be selected to participate in one of two available teams.

The Information Services Apprenticeships are broken into 5 different areas of focus. The skills listed are more focused around what you are willing to learn early or have some base knowledge of:

Focus Areas


1. Infrastructure Cloud Engineering

  • Experience or exposure to PowerShell, Python or Java
  • During apprenticeship work towards getting certified in Microsoft 365 Admin Management and Microsoft Power Platform Fundamentals
  • Gain understanding our data sources
  • Gain understanding of administering Power Platform and Power BI
  • Ability to critical think and provide a clear solution

2. Technical Support Services

  • Interest in Computer Science and Information Services certainly preferred but not required.
  • Experience with basic desktop/laptop hardware (personal use is fine).
  • Experience with basic desktop/laptop software (i.e. Windows, Office, etc.)
  • Ability to solve problems and troubleshoot
  • Ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced environment

3. Clinical Information Systems – Imaging

  • Python
  • PowerShell
  • SQL
  • Application software build, test, and configurations
  • ServiceNow, ITSM skills
  • Radiation oncology clinical workflow documentation
  • Architecture foundations – connecting application software, hardware, network, and security for healthcare IT solutions

4. Epic Clinical Technical Support

  • Software installation and configuration, troubleshooting and providing vendor assistance for existing software applications
  • Software installation and configuration, troubleshooting and providing vendor assistance for any new software
  • New deployment testing and troubleshooting for Lab systems
  • Printer incidents requiring printer settings fixes/updates
  • Service Now Ticket triage, follow-up with customer, and eventually ticket resolution for ad-hoc requests from Lab
  • SSL Certificate renewals

5. Data Center Operations

  • Linux experience required, Red Hat preferred
  • Familiarity with OS updating
  • Documenting server environments, making recommendations for resources
  • Monitoring backups
  • Familiarity with scripting including Perl and Python languages

Responsibilities

Description

  • Uphold the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine.
  • Successfully complete projects and work tasks assigned.
  • Develop a working knowledge of hospital operations to a degree that allows for the successful completion of projects supporting a variety of hospital operations.
  • Develop working relationships with staff and management that allows for successful business interactions across all levels of the organization.

Participation in activities designed for the development of apprentices during their assignment at Northwestern Medicine

Qualifications

Required

  • High School Diploma.
  • To be enrolled at the CCC in an Associate’s program in computer science, IT, or other relevant field of study.
  • GPA of 2.5 or higher.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Product suite (e.g., Word, Excel, OneNote, and PowerPoint).

 

Preferred

Experience with any programming language.

  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Innate curiosity for learning.
